06/01/2002: "Required Reading"
I don't recall exactly how I stumbled across dustbury.com, longtime home of Charles Hill, but I'm glad that I did. Dustbury is a state of mind, located somewhere in Oklahoma, at the intersection of 42nd and Treadmill. He's been blogging, in one form or another, since 1996. He posts daily (usually), but he also has a page chock-full of longer rants, which he titles "Vents," that are quite interesting, chronicling pop culture (even Debbie Deborah Gibson), my favorite (but now defunct) magazine, former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich, his own site's sorta-page-ranking, the DoJs windmill-tilting at Microsoft, and everything else under the sun. I bring him to your attention for two reasons: first, he is remarkably intelligent, and his opinions are usually fleshed out by insightful references and relevant links; second, because he actually writes on his site. Me, on the other hand...well, I -- and many other bloggers and daily-posters -- simply type words that convey our attitude or thoughts, but Charles writes, and he writes damn well. Funny, too. You know how most people enjoy Sgt Stryker not only for his opinions, but also for his style of writing? There's just something deliciously satisfying about reading something that has actually been thought out in advance, where the words accurately convey not just thought, but also nuance and subtlety. So, if you haven't already, read dustbury.com. Go check it out, and be sure to add it to your list of linkages.
