January 29, 2003Steel With Every MealIn other news - my youngest child got braces today. She handled it well, with only a wince or two...the discomfort she feels is outweighed by the "fashion" aspect of the braces (which feature cool green bands), coupled with sharing something in common with many of her friends, most of whom also have braces. For me...well, seeing her in the chair with braces for the first time made me rather wistful, as I realized that true "childhood" now is behind her, and us. After all, babies and small children don't have braces - teens & pre-teens do. She's not a baby, and not even a kid anymore ...she's a bundle of opinions, questions, insight, articulation, and energy...a very young adult, reinforced today by undergoing one of the traditional rites of passage as she transitions from Small to Medium. Wow. Posted by davidmsc at January 29, 2003 07:20 PMComments
My memories of braces are nothing but sheer misery for the whole time I had them. Of course, I think my mouth was more fouled up than most -- oral surgery was involved, as well. I'm glad to hear your daughter's experience is more positive. Progress is a good thing. Wish her good luck for me. :) Posted by: mtpolitics at January 29, 2003 08:23 PMThanks, Craig. It's gratifying to me that my daughters both had the "wisdom" to see the long-term benefit of braces...unlike their lunkhead dad (me), who cringed at the very thought of even a moment of discomfort, and now is a 37-year old man with very crooked teeth... Posted by: DavidMSC at January 29, 2003 08:52 PMI wish my kido's were old enough to get braces if they need them, from what I understand it is dental welfare while we are stationed overseas and would not cost us a red penny. I hope you have insurance other than tricare. Posted by: Rick at January 30, 2003 08:22 AMPost a comment
