Casting Call

atlascover.jpg We've all played the game before, but Raymond has elevated it to a whole new level - he's cast nearly every character in the book! The game, of course, is "Who should play Galt/Dagny/Frisco/Hank/etc" in any "Atlas Shrugged" movie. Some thoughts: despite Rand's description, I've always pictured Dagny as having black hair. And for cryin' out loud - please, please, please don't let Julia Roberts have *any* role in this movie.

But I digress. I can see Harrison Ford doing a passable Hank Rearden, but I'm stumped on Francisco. And for some reason, I keep seeing Samuel Jackson in the role of Ragnar - it would work, trust me. I really like Raymond's choice for the role of the Cigarette Store man - very poetic. Keep reading to see some of his other choices...

Jennifer Garner as Dagny Taggart; James Caviziel as James Taggart; Jake Busey as Eddie Willers; Andy Garcia as Francisco d'Anconia; Eric Close as John Galt * ; Dolph Lundgren as Ragnar Danneskjold; Dennis Quaid as Hank Rearden; Randy Quaid as Phillip Rearden; Bruce Willis as Paul Larkin

Go see Raymond's entire list for yourself and try to get some visuals in your head...interesting, yes? And if you're wondering who Rand herself saw portraying her creations, here you go. Hit-n-Run got in on the action, too.

Oh, and while Googling for some background on this entry, I found an interesting picture that someone (Christin Ranger?) drew, depicting Dagny surrounded by some "secondhanders" (?), while Galt's silhouette appears in front of a train. I think.

* The only modern-day actor that I can see portraying John Galt is Eric Close, of "Now & Again" fame. I suggested it to Raymond, and he agreed with me -- what do you think?

I heard years ago (1994-ish) that Sharon Stone was hot for the role. We thought the movie would be made back then, too. Good luck, folks.

I can't help but concur with many of the comments on Hit and Run. My "sense of life" still has an Ayn Rand ethos to it, and I still admire the woman's brilliance. When she kept her head and studied the facts unemotionally, she could make some brilliant, well-balanced observations. But I'm over idolizing her as a philosopher. Heavy thinker, perhaps; well-rounded thinker - not by any measure.

I wrote a post a while back - http://www.kenshogodchaser.com/article.php?story=20030813122115395 - detailing what I learned from Rand, and how she fits into my current system of thinking. It's one of the highest-hit articles on my site - partially, I think, because some of my old Objectivist friends happene dupon it and are forwarding it around to show my old cronies what a relativistic irrational dweeb I have become.

Sigh. Objectivists. No wonder they need their own dating service: http://www.theatlasphere.com/

I don't know about all the choices but I cannot see Jake Busey as Eddie. That just dosen't seem like a fit to me. I also can't see Eric Close for John Galt. Don't ask me who for either of these roles since I can't offhand think of anybody.

Re: secondhanders

The one in the upper left looks strikingly like a former US president.

Coincidence?

The cast for the second-handers matters not. Any "typical" actor/actress will do as long as they are plain and ordinary.

Dagny, Galt, and Hank need to be intiguing, intelligent, and dripping with sex appeal.

Dennis Quaid has his comedic charms, but he is definitely not Reardon caliber.

Eric Close may be a little on the "pretty" side to play Galt, but maybe with a shaggy haircut...

I cannot believe that ANYONE considered Sigourney for Dagny. That insults the character. (She'd make a better Lillian.)

Rand may have been over the top, but it's brilliance none-the-less; I hope that when/if the film is made, it is treated accordingly.

Amen, bro. Amen.
