April 13, 2004Plain SpeakingOliver, of course, is not impressed with the press conference that President Bush conducted this evening - aside from the politics, what bothered Oliver was the President's "...rote nonstop repetition of the same talking points over and over again." My response: President Bush's message is simple and can be summed up in plain English -- no need to change the words if the message is correct. "Prettying it up" by using fancy words, or trying to tap-dance through a field of fluffy euphemisms or political catchphrases, or using PhD-worthy words won't change the importance, the sincerity, or the reality of his message. Like you said, it seems Bush is damned either way; I strongly suspect that if he were coached to use pretentious language (which is rapidly becoming a no-no these days), people would complain that he sounded...well, pretentious. My objection was to the line of questioning which demanded that he take full responsibility for 9/11 - and only the terrorists should be doing that. The worst part was the medea created idea that support for the President's policies is waning. If that is the case, it is due to media influence, not because of any failing's of President Bush's policies. Iraq is going as well as could have been expected; it could still be much, much worse.
