April 26, 2004By Any Other NameAll this coverage during the last week about a military draft is pretty depressing. A draft is, quite simply, immoral. It is involuntary servitude - slavery, if you will - in that it proclaims that a person's life literally belongs to the state. Yes, there could be some beneficial side-effects of a military draft -- many young men (and women, if drafted) would gain useful skills, perhaps appreciate history more, enjoy a new-found sense of patriotism, and might even become "better" citizens -- but the immorality of a draft far outweighs any possible benefits. I hope the 'coverage' is just...talk. Posted by: maura at April 26, 2004 09:32 PMIt won't ever happen. Posted by: Easycure at April 27, 2004 03:31 PMMy understanding is that the military doesn't even want it anyway. Posted by: sama at April 28, 2004 04:58 AMWhen I was in the military, nobody wanted a draft; we were proud of our volunteer forces. The last time I asked, that was still the case.
