April 27, 2004Page MemeBefore I get to the meme, check out me in a cow-suit. And now, on to the show...I meant to do this earlier, I swear...and I even promised James that I would do it last weekend...but better late than never, eh? You all know the drill: grab the nearest book, turn to page 23, and post the fifth sentence on that page. Peering through the gate, we saw an elegant hacienda-style home, sitting at the end of a crescent drive lined by light poles. Well, that certainly sounds boring, doesn't it? Luck of the draw, though...the book isn't as humdrum as that one sentence might lead you to believe. It's from a book called "A Slow Walk To Hell" by Patrick Davis. It was a late-night grocery store pick, and the author being former Air Force convinced me to give it a try.
From Amazon.com: "Air Force investigator Martin Collins is used to bucking the system in the name of justice. But when he is called on to investigate the torture-style slaying of Major Franklin Talbot, Collins is embroiled in the most controversial case of his career. Evidence suggests that the deadly act was a hate crime -- and that Talbot was hiding a shocking secret that may have sealed his fate. Even more shocking are the suspects: all high-ranking officers -- including Talbot's own uncle, a leading presidential candidate."
It's written rather well, and the characters are fleshed out decently, but the whole novel hinges on bizarre sex crimes, coupled with some religious/guilt issues that I just can't relate to, so it's more of an exercise in simply getting to the end of the book and finding out whodunnit. And it's going on a bit too long...I think it could have been "tightened up" if Davis had trimmed about fifty or so pages. So out of four stars, I'd give it two stars. From AutoCAD 14 Instant Reference: On page 23, the fifth sentence reads: Plot - Plot drawings in displayed in list box. I use AutoCAD every day and I don't know what that means (exactly). Yawn. That's all I got. Posted by: Easycure at April 27, 2004 03:31 PMFascinating. Don't let those ranchers get ahold of you - they might try to milk you! Posted by: Renee at April 27, 2004 08:28 PMYikes, AUTOCAD. They're trying to turn me into an engineer. Um, the cow suit? Rocks. Marley's got the hots for you now, too. Posted by: maura at April 27, 2004 08:47 PMIf that cow suit doesn't scream whimsy I don't know what does. Posted by: Tiffany at April 28, 2004 11:49 AMNow that's sexy, Dave. You should wear that more often... Posted by: Burnt Fuse at April 28, 2004 05:52 PMPost a comment
