May 29, 2004Thanks, But NoOver at MeFi, there is a very short thread about the online site Salon.com offering free Premium memberships to active-duty military personnel. The reason: "We celebrate Memorial Day by offering active-duty soldiers free Premium subscriptions."Wow - that's awfully nice of Salon, isn't it? Um...actually, no, once you read about the "reason" that Salon is making the offer... Salon is offering free Premium memberships to military personnel because: "The men and women who are risking their lives abroad deserve to fully enjoy one of its essential cornerstones -- a free press. But by bombarding military personnel every day with Limbaugh's incendiary tirades, to the exclusion of all other views, American Forces Radio and Television is ensuring that its vast, uniformed audience is exposed only to the rantings of the far right." Nice. Real nice, Salon...assuming that military personnel are being coerced into listening to "rantings of the far right." Assuming that even those who don't agree with Rush are forced to listen to his broadcast. Assuming that no member of the military has the brainpower to change the station, pick up a magazine, or otherwise opt for something other than Rush Limbaugh. My reply: What jerks those Salon people are...first of all, did it ever occur to them that many people in the military WANT to listent to Rush Limbaugh? Sheesh...from the article, you'd think that the troops overseas are being strapped to chairs with toothpicks propping their eyesand being force-fed a steady diet of right-wing propaganda and visual imagery of...well, something insidious. Military personnel are PEOPLE who are extrememly capable of thinking for themselves, making their own decisions, and choosing what media outlets to watch, listen to, and consume. There isn't a troop in the world that doesn't have access to a wide variety of news, political views, and other media (short of when they are directly involved in combat). But -- much to the Left's dismay -- there are far more military personnel whose values more closely align with "conservative" ideology than "liberal" ideology. Not all of the troops, and not all of the time, but IN GENERAL, it's true. So it's hardly suprising that many of them enjoy listening to a broadcaster like Rush. Do you think I could be thrown in jail if I bitch slapped them? Posted by: Jen at May 29, 2004 12:08 PMNice scoop! Salon, which wasn't one of the places I ever considered using in any case, will forever be on my sh*t list. Posted by: Easycure at May 29, 2004 06:00 PMSalon sucks ass. I could say more, but this isn't my house and I don't especially want to be smacked tonight. Posted by: Burnt Fuse at May 30, 2004 12:34 AMGood old Rush is just a 3 hour rant for the Republican Party! His producer is Roger Ailes, the head of Fox news. I read a article comparing his defense of Bush, to James Carville defending Clinton. Both Rush and James knew their heros were wrong, but they never just shut the hell up!Back when I heard that Rush was having hearing problems, I commented, "Yeah, he only hears what he wants to hear!";-) Posted by: Joe G at May 30, 2004 11:14 PMPost a comment
