May 30, 2004Give Me Libertarians, or Give Me...?Anybody else watching the Libertarian National Convention on C-SPAN? It's a hoot. The blind candidate who rails against "baby-killers"; the halftime show featuring the heroic (snicker) "Reefer Refugees"; the candidate whose mother appeared on-stage to endorse (surprise!) her son; and so much more. BTW, I am being completely sarcastic, you know. The LP will forever be doomed to "banana-republic" status among political organizations and credibility - primarily because of the LP's pre-occupation -- obsession, even -- of legalizing drugs. With all due respect to Libertarians and their supporters (such as Hit-n-Run), this single issue - drugs - will always prevent the party from becoming a major player in American politics. Even people who support broad Libertarian Party principles sense that "decriminalizing" drugs is a non-starter, and will shy away from the LP as a whole.Just stating the facts. OOh... Gotta go watch!!! Posted by: sama at May 30, 2004 10:28 AMA fun group to watch, but you're right. They will be forever relegated to cult status with the drug albatross around their necks. A mule-headed assortment of crimps, spungs, and feebs. Posted by: Velociman at May 30, 2004 07:03 PMMy brother is a card-carrying Libertarian. I wonder if people ever confuse him with a card-carrying Librarian. Why the hell would you need a card? He doesn't even smoke pot. He's not even a GOOD Libertarian. Maybe he should be a Librarian. In the wake of Abu Ghraib, the Libertarians could, if they did it right, shake up a significant portion of the electorate and say, "And *this* is what happens in U.S. prisons as well, where [X] percent of our own population is incarcerated." (I remember X being some rather ridiculously high number, no? Significantly greater than 1% at any rate.) Posted by: Dave at June 1, 2004 11:52 AMPost a comment
