Judging The Book

Oliver doesn't appreciate that some people are judging Michael (Jackass) Moore's 9/11 movie without actually having seen it. Says Oliver:

"Like every other movie -- from 'Batman Returns' to 'Pulp Fiction' to 'Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure' -- I'm going to actually go and see the damn thing before I review it Which is more than I can say for many folks out there, both pro (mostly con)."
Well, that's just silly. My response to Oliver was something like this...

I don't need to see the movie in order to judge it. The content of the movie, the subject matter, the motives of the creator (Moore), knowledge of Moore's previous movies, and various interviews and appearances by Moore -- all of these contain absolutely enough information with which to form an opinion. I seriously doubt that, were I to actually watch the movie, I would find that Moore had somehow undergone a complete transformation and was now championing the President, supporting the war, and 'fessing up to his despicable past.

Oh, and one of the commenters in Oliver's entry asks for a website that documents the claims against Moore (fast-n-loose handling of the truth, his deceptive movie-making practices, and his overall weasel-ness). I'm more than happy to oblige:

The Truth About "Bowling For Columbine"; Moore Lies: The Permanent Record; Bowling For Truth; MooreWatch; Moore Exposed; and Spinsanity: Viewer Beware.

That is one hundred percent true David. Sometimes for a person they just have to look at the person involved and realize that it's a bunch of looney.

Now I realize that my political beliefs lie somewhere west of "crazy liberal" here in Montana but I do have to say I'm going to see the movie. I one hundred percent understand that Michael Moore makes my side appear weaker than we would without him "championing" for us in his over-the-top way but I'd still like to see it to know what it says.

My unabiding and constant dislike for and disapproval of our current head of state is completely independent of Michael Moore, and I'm sure I'm not the only liberal who feels this way.

And that's just me chiming in from the "we're not all psycho" camp.

Even though we're on different sides of the fence on this one (I love ya anyway), I do agree with your logic that in your case you don't have to see it to know you're not going to like it. It would be the same with me and say, Bill O'Reilly. It's not like an ignorant "Green Eggs And Ham" situation, we both know from being well informed that we're not fans, and I don't think there's anything wrong with that.

The "go and partake before offering an opinion" crowd is a fascinating bunch. I wonder if they refuse to opine on the recent beheadings without first searching out the videos online. "Gosh, Bob, I don't know that the beheading wasn't done humanely. I only have heard that it was heinous from others who saw it but I can't say 'til I see it for myself."

I tell ya, this logic is enough to make me wanna jump off a cliff. Yeah, I've heard that can kill you but until I try for myself, I'm not so sure.
