We have a large National Guard and Air National Guard prescence here in Columbus, Ohio (it's the state capital, after all). One day an ANG Huey pocked by overhead. A door gunner was sitting with his legs dangling out thedoor, leaning on his M60. Everybody in view started to wave and holler, people holding their kids up to see the low flying chopper. The door gunner smiled and waved.

Two years ago a flight of F16's flew slowly over the city to start our annual 4th of July celebration. The noise was deafening. When it faded the only thing you could hear was people cheering and clapping, while drivers blew their horns in appreciation.

Both times the one thing that ran through my mind was "Where else, in what other country, does everybody cheer and clap instead of run for cover?"

At least it ran through my mind after I stopped waving, cheering and clapping myself.
