My fair community of Great Falls has made the “cover” of Sploid for what I’d wager is the very first time. The news story that has captivated readers across the nation (people love runaway cow stories!) is not civic issues such as the swearing-in of our new mayor, nor is it an article about the financial woes of our city-supported golf courses, nor is it news about the new Wal-Mart that will be built. Nope, this story is about a cow: a cow that escaped the slaughterhouse on the southeast side of town and eluded authorities for hours as it sprinted over 8 miles, crossed the Missouri River, dodged traffic, and was shot with tranquilizers. This isn’t the first time that animals have hit the road from the same facility: back in 2003, some bison escaped and went charging down 10th Avenue South, the main street in Great Falls, on a snowy, traffic-filled day. As for the runaway cow: despite my intense carnivorous tendencies, I think that this particular bovine has earned her freedom; any cow with this much spunk is way too special to be served up for dinner!
(ps - kudos to the photographer who snapped this awesome picture!)
UPDATE: The cow, named Molly B, is likely going to escape the slaughterhouse and live out her days grazing peacefully!
