It’s about 60 degrees right now…which is rather warm for this time of year in central Montana…but the really weird part is that it is 90 degrees warmer right now than it was last Thursday & Friday. NINETY DEGREES warmer. That’s a lot of degrees.

Wheeee! It’s -24 right now…our high temp today was -17…more weather news from Montana over at the Big Sky Blog.

You all know how much I *love* the cold and the snow. But – and it pains me to admit it – it’s getting a bit too cold even for me. We started off at -6 this morning, and by 11:00 am it was -13. By the time I drove home at 5:30 pm, it was -18. Of course, if my car heater worked I might not be complaining at all, but I digress. The forecast for tonight calls for “near-record lows.” In Montana, the words “record low” indicate something pretty extreme. Right now, a low tonight of -30 is what the forecasters are predicting, with a high tomorrow of -13. So…would I trade it for 90 degrees somewhere down south? (more…)

Woke up at 4:45 am – temp was 29 degrees. Left for work at 7:00 am – temp was 28 degrees. Checked the weather at 8:15 am – it was 28 degrees. Then it started snowing a bit. And got really windy. Checked the temperature at 10:00 am – it was -3 degrees. Now, at 1:53 pm, it’s about -6 and the windchill is probably around -25 or -30. Snow is still falling, but it’s all crazy - blowing thisway and thatway. Sure is pretty outside.
Watching the Weather Channel last night for updates on The Blizzard…the orange crawl on the bottom on the screen with the latest updates…and the following words appeared: “…periods of blowing snow snow.” Hee hee! “Blowing snow snow!” We’ve got a new catch-phrase!

For the first time since I arrived here in 2002, the word BLIZZARD is being used. Specifically, an official Blizzard Warning for tomorrow. High temp will be reached in the a.m. – about 18 degrees – and quickly plummet throughout the day, as up to 3 inches of snow are whipped horizontally by winds of 35 mph – and gusting to over 50 mph. Wind chills for tomorrow and Thursday are expected to be between -35 and -50. Visibility will be as little as zero.
Promises to be interesting.

As crappy as some things are, I just *can’t* get in too foul a mood. Garage door is broken, my car heater is fritzing, and if it wasn’t hovering around 0 degrees neither of these facts would be that worrisome. But still – I love the cold, I love the snow, I love the “snow glow,” and I just can’t stop loving it.

As much as I *love* the cold weather and the snow, it does present a few challenges. For instance, the heated garage that the Better Living Wife and I spend quite a bit of time in (our smoking lounge) is much LESS heated these last few days…when the temp outside is -12, there’s only so much that the heater can do, after all. And Elder Daughter’s vehicle is being balky…I told her to start it up every few hours during the weekend, but did she listen…? So I have to head over to Home Depot to buy a long extension cord to plug into her block heater, which I am told will give it enough “juice” to start. And my car…well, it runs fine, but the heater is spotty at best. Blows hot air for about two or three minutes, then begins blowing progressively colder air. Turn it off. Wait for about four or five minutes, then turn it on again, and it blows hot air for another few minutes, and then turns cold again. Grrrrrr… So off to the service station tomorrow – the consensus among my car-savvy friends is that the thermostat needs to be replaced. Sigh. So, there are challenges involved with sub-zero weather, but I still wouldn’t trade the cold & the snow! Oh – and some big, fluffy flakes have been falling during the last couple of hours…got my fingers crossed!

The folks at Weather Underground say that it is currently -11 degrees, but it sure doesn’t feel like it; I would have pegged the current temp at around -4, maybe -6. (more…)
It stopped snowing earlier today, but began again around 9:30 pm, and is still coming down (albeit somewhat lightly). So, we have about 10 or 12 inches on the ground, the temperature is -8 degrees (Fahrenheit), and we probably won’t get above 0 for another couple of days. We’ll be lucky to get above the freezing point by Thursday or Friday. Now – show of hands – how many of you think that I am happy with this weather?
December 31, 2004
Officially, we received 5.9″ of snow on as of midnight last night. And since then, we’ve received another 2 or 3 inches. And the NWS says that we can expect 2-5 inches more before tomorrow morning. I’ll be sure to add a few more pix to the moblog. Yes, I am very happy today. Or, in Jen-speak: *claps*
MORE: snow will stop on Saturday (probably)…but as you can see, the COLD will continue! (more…)

It drizzled for about an hour starting at 9:30 pm. Around 10:45 pm, it turned to snow. It’s coming down real nice now, over 90 minutes later. I have high expectations for this storm! Definitely going to need the snow-shovel in the a.m. And in case you missed earlier reports, here is the latest forecast for Great Falls:

One of the best things about the snow is the night-time effect…when whatever amount of moonlight there happens to be is reflected off of the snowfall, creating a very pale glow that is everywhere all at once, almost greyish-lavender, if that can be described as a color. It’s just beautiful. ALSO: speaking of the magic of snow, the lovely Viking Zen has a poem posted that captures some of the beauty of the fluffy white stuff.
Woke up to another very thin layer of snow blanketing the world…and it’s snowing right now! Color me tickled! ALSO: do you know what music is *perfect* to listen to when the snow is falling? This one. (right-click, save as; happy holidays to you!)
EDIT: Winter is busting out all over Montana – take a peek via some Montana web-cams!
EDIT: It’s also snowing at Asherah’s…and over at Rita’s…anyone else…?
EDIT:Wheeee! It’s gonna get colder faster…

December 21, 2004
Well, I suppose that the faux-snow (hee!) that I placed on the page yesterday worked some sort of vood00 magic – we actually got some REAL snow last night! Not a lot - but enough to cover all the roof-tops with a thin layer of powdery-white fluff, and the windshields, and such. Most of it is gone now, but the forecasters say we should get some more tonight. I’ve got my fingers crossed – and hey, today is the first day of winter, so it would be quite fitting!
EDIT: added picture of tomorrow’s temps…hooray for winter!
