More Name Fun

I’m sure many of you are familiar with the old joke about villians from the James Bond movies that goes something like this…what do you get when you cross Oddjob and Blofeld? Blo-job! Well, I thought of another one…what do you get when you cross Pussy Galore and Plenty O’Toole?

A Rose By Any Other Name

For some reason, I wondered a few days ago if there is anybody with the last name of “Schitt.” A quick search revealed that there is indeed.

Inanities

“As you may or may not know…” DUH. Every person that you are addressing either DOES or DOES NOT know.
“The fact of the matter is…” Don’t waste your breath and my time; this is just wrong.
“Now, having said that…” Wait a minute – are you about to contradict yourself?

Any others?

Jim over at Parkway Rest Stop has unleashed a new word on the ‘Sphere: lipogram ( “a text that purposefully excludes a particular letter of the alphabet"). For instance, this post that you are reading right now does not contain the last letter of the alphabet. So: my challenge to you, gentle readers, is to compose an entire entry on your respective sites that does NOT contain the letter…ummm…let’s see, we’ll make it challenging…OK, you may not use the letter R. The topic: at least 75 words about your favorite film. Without using the letter “R” in any way. And if your favorite film contains the letter R in the title, then choose your 2nd favorite film. Ready? GO!

UPDATE: Pandora has completed her assignment and earned an “A!”

Naughty Words

Charles points out some rather unexpected results of searching for words that seem innocuous: NIGHTWATCH and SOCIALISM. Not together - separate searches, but both blocked by very literal-minded software.

My most recent experience with a “safe surfing” blocker occurred at work a few months ago…you see, I work at a nuclear-missile base (but not WITH the missiles - relax), and I was doing a bit of research on various missiles in order to better understand the history of same. But: whenever I tried to Google for “TITAN MISSILE,” I was thwarted by the Secure Computing program. Silly me – I puzzled over the blockage for a good ten minutes before I understood.

Go West

(a) Tacoma. Santa Fe. Montana. Dakota. Tahoe. Durango. Tucson. Sedona.
Naming vehicles after locations in the West: Good.

(b) Wilmington. Boston. Tallahassee. Frankfort. Albany. Bangor. Cleveland. Little Rock.
Naming vehicles after locations in the East: Ain’t gonna happen.

Heck, they don’t even have to name it after a specific place – just a word that captures the spirit of the West is enough.

EDIT: As pointed out in comments, Little Rock is WEST of the Mississippi, so may not qualify as “East” to some people…but I usually consider WEST to be anything on the LEFT side of, say, Interstate 35. Roughly. MORE: Whoa – Geo is correct in comments – there is, indeed, an “Eastern” car: the Chrysler New Yorker…and I should have known that, seeing as how my very first car was a ‘73 (or ‘72?) Chrysler New Yorker. Good catch, Geo!
