My favorite movie reviewer is Roger Ebert.  If you only know him from his TV show,
do yourself a favor and buy one of his books of movie reviews - comprehensive, multi-year, and chock-full
of insights into many movies, actors, techniques, directors, etc.

What are the biggest block-busters of all time?  Are you sure?  Check out the answer at Worldwide Box Office!

Of course, if you just want to know about the big hits of the past weekend, go to Variety's Box Office Tally.

In no particular order, here are some of my favorite movies,
each one clickable to more information via IMDB:

Singin' In The Rain:  Musicals rarely, if ever, get better than this.  Gene Kelly's "happy dance" in the rain remains one of the most joyous occasions ever filmed.  A young Debbie Reynolds is positively glowing, and Donald O'Connor as Cosmo remains one of the best sidekicks ever created.

On The Town:  Wow!  There's so much talent crammed into this movie!  The singing (New York, New York, it's a heckuva town...), the dancing, the frivolity of the tone interplayed with the seriousness of the pursuit of "Miss Turnstile" - all classic!  Hey - it has both Gene Kelly & Frank Sinatra - 'nuff said.

Batman:  Probably the best visually appealing movie I've seen.  No other film can capture the dark tone that Burton created
with this masterpiece.  A few cliches too many (notably Joker shooting the Batplane down, after falling to be hit by ANY of
Batman's bullets), but for overall tone, mood, and just plain "Dark," this is it.

Airplane!  No other movie comes close to replicating this absolutely perfect comedy?  Plot?  Maybe.  Do we care?  No.  Sight gags, running jokes, word-play, dreadful puns...this is tops!

I saw FOUR movies in the theatre during Summer 2000 -- a record for me (at least since 1989).  Here is what I saw:

X-Men     Chicken Run     Titan AE      Godzilla 2000

Hmmm...do these movies have anything at all in common...?  Think about it...that's right, they are all "extra-ordinary!"
This is not "the people next door" or wild teens or disease-of-the-week or mundane crap...the whole point of
BIG-SCREEN MOVIES is to see stuff that you CAN'T (or SHOULDN'T) see on your television!  Some stories need
to be told on a big screen, in a cavernous theater, with the lights down...and these four are perfect examples.
Stuff like "Double Jeopardy" or "Scary Movie" are just run-of-the-mill events that you shouldn't shell out $$ to see...the first
is just another crime movie, and the second is nothing more (or less) than an expanded Saturday Night Live
or MadTV skit.  Pay $$$ to see amazing things, fantastic worlds, and incredible creatures (or people).  Got it?  Good.

Now...as far as a good example of a bad movie, look no further than "American Beauty."  This is pure filth...no redeeming
qualities at all.  The acting is fine, and the appearance/sets/costumes/etc are all adequate (at least), but the theme,
tone, and message of the movie all point to one thing:  people are bad.  Don't waste time or money on this garbage.
