Comments On: Momentous Day

I was working for Big Bear Stores, running their mainframe during 3rd shift.

I was taking some garbage out around 04:00 hours when I noticed a newspaper that had the headline "WAR IN THE MIDDLE EAST".

That was the first I'd heard of it, standing there on the edge of a huge dumpster and reading an old newspaper.

I was between classes in Med school, on Navy scholarship, and knew it wasn't good. I had no idea it would lead to this, however.

I was serving on the ROK at the time (Repubic Of Korea) and if I recall, the North was doing a lot of saber rattling then too, we were on high alert during the entire Op Desert Shield/Storm.

Watching Classified News Netword on the edge of my seat. (Most of the base I lived on had been deployed already, so it wasn't like it was "new news.")

Oh and I was also five months' pregnant.

Yes, indeed I do. I was one day away from my ETS date from the Army. I had taken 45 days leave out of my accrued 90 so I was already outprocessed. My fellow soldiers, who had not taken any leave or didn't have any left, had their contracts "reworked". And, it was my 21st birthday.
