Presumably, the new name "Department of Defense" was a concession to the Depts. of Navy and Air Force when the War Dept. took them over. However, Dept. of War is a much more honest and preferable moniker. Since we're thinking sensibly about merging some cabinet level departments, how about merging the Depts. of Agriculture, Commerce, Labor, & Transportation into a Department of the Economy? And for that matter, move the Dept. of Vet. Affairs back into the New Dept. of War. Posted by Lance Jonn Romanoff at February 27, 2003 11:50 AMI'm thinking of a name that starts with the letter "A." Actually, the DoW had to change it's name due to the restructuring of 1948. The Department of War covered the Army and the Department of the Navy covered the...Navy. When they decided to create the DoD, the Joint Chiefs and the Department of the Air Force in '48, they decided to bring everyone under one roof and one command structure, the Department of Defense.
Personally, I think we ought to rename it the Legion of Doom. Posted by Paul at February 27, 2003 10:12 PMAn old sci-fi book proposed two departments, a Department of Defense and a Department of Deterrence. During peace, Deterrence was at Cabinet level, and dictated how the Defense Dept's resources were allocated. If a war were declared, they would invert, with Defense on top and in the Cabinet, and Deterrence's resources at the disposal of Defense. Posted by Fuz at February 27, 2003 10:27 PMPost a comment
