Why do tornadoes fascinate so many people?  I can think of a few reasons:

1.  A tornado is likely the largest moving object that a person will ever see (think about it).
2.  The power of a tornado is truly awesome (not good - just awesome).
3.  Tornado = exciting weather = wind, energy, alive
4.  Rare enough to be magical, common enough to find if you work at it.
5.  Simply put, they can be beautiful.

Crazy?  Perhaps.  But for many people (like me), simply seeing footage on TV of a powerful tornado is enough to stop them dead in their tracks, jaw hung open, and stare in amazement.  Don't get me wrong - I most emphatically do NOT want to be in one, or see people hurt or killed, or valuable property destroyed.  But I'd wager that for most tornado lovers, the perfect situation would be to see a large (F5?) tornado descend in the middle of a large, open plain, whisk along for a few hundred yards, and then vanish into the sky - no one hurt, nothing destroyed.

Here are some interesting sites with information, pictures, or video of tornadoes:

Chase Day!  Awesome pictures from a dedicated chaser.

Tornado Project - Very good site for information.

National Severe Storms Laboratory (NSSL) - Located in Norman, Oklahoma, this is the heart of official information about tornadoes and research into this incredible phenomenon.  Lots of techie stuff!

Storm Track - The "official" magazine for the chasing community - provides commentary and diary-format
entries from professional chasers following their dramatic pursuits.

KWTV - Channel 9 in Oklahoma City - "Ground Zero" for many, many tornadoes, including the historic
May 3, 1999 twister, and the home station of meteorologist Gary England,
who has been something of a pioneer in the field of TV twister coverage.
