ENID:
WHY I LOVE IT!
I know, I know...you're
thinking, "What the...why on earth would anyone care about
Enid, Oklahoma, let
alone want to LIVE there??"
Trust me...it's not
what you think. Enid is a great
little town - the key words are "great" and "little."
The population hovers
around 45,000 people, and there are only about 50,000 in the whole county.
You see - not enough
many people to cause traffic jams or hugs crowds at the mall
(YES, Enid has a
mall).
Enid has a cute town
square, bordered by the Post Office, a great library,
many small shops, a
well-manicured park,
and some nice small restaurants. The aforementioned mall is surprisingly
large for
such a small community;
I've been to towns nearly three times the size of Enid that don't have
a comparable
mall. The reason:
people from all over NW Oklahoma and southern Kansas come to Enid for shopping!
Contemporary music & books? No problem - there is a Hasting's
in Enid. And wouldja believe that
Enid even has an
Old Navy?!
Enid has two hospitals,
fully staffed & equipped to handle most medical care that a person
needs.
There are physical
therapists, OB/GYN, and all the usual stuff. Radiology, nursing homes,
senior
center,
you name it.
Enid also has some alternative/complementary medicine stores.
Dining? No problem
- there are the usual fast food and chains here, notably Applebee's and
(hooray!)
Chili's! There
are some locally-owned restaurants, too, including some honest-to-goodness
drugstore
diner-types, which
I didn't realize still existed outside of Archie comics and "Leave It To
Beaver."
And, yes, the mall
has a food court.
Fun stuff? Again,
no problem. There is a very active community theater/dinner theater,
a waterpark,
a roller-rink, movie
theaters, a "discovery" science museum
combined with a large "Lincoln-Log" inspired park, several large
recreational
parks, golf courses and
a country club.
Education - of course.
You can get all the credit you want - Enid hosts two college campuses
(NOC,
NWOSU)
and one vocation-technology campus.
And, as much as I
hate sports, I have to put in a plug for the Oklahoma
Storm, Enid's
minor-league pro
basketball team.
And if you just have
to experience "big city" life, or feel some desperate need to be stuck
in traffic,
you only have to
drive 70 minutes to get to Oklahoma City, which is truly a metropolitan
area and
offers anything (product/service/etc)
that you might need to see or do. It's a nice drive, too, with
almost no traffic
(until you get to the city). And contrary to what you might have
heard, OKC is a
wonderful city, too.
The entire metro area boasts nearly one million people, so of course it
has
EVERY major convenience
of a city.
There is also a small
airport
(all flights depart from Gate #1) in case you need to jet.
Regular, daily service
available.
And the sky...one
of the BEST features. When you look up in the sky, you will likely
see one of
two things:
crisp, clear, crystal blue sky that seems to stretch for miles, or twirling,
beautiful,
bubbling storm
clouds. Either way, it's magical. If you've never seen
storm clouds in Oklahoma,
then you just haven't
seen storm clouds. They entrance you - truly majestic.
It's safe. It's
tranquil. It's relaxing. It's Enid.
